Breaking up is hard to do
"They say that breaking up is hard to do. Now I know" I know it's not true. Well, not in Thinking Out Loud's case when they gave a rocking good farewell performance to their fans at their last gig at The Fringe on Friday, 15th July. Chris W, their guitarist, and Mysterious Mr B, their saxophone player, are sadly leaving them.
It's not often that TOL have another band on with them at The Fringe, but this time they had Luke Chow and friends. Maybe because of nerves but Luke fluffed a chord or two, but with restarting a song, they went through their set without any further hitches. Not that it really detracted from their performance. Luke has character enough to make remarks about it to the crowd, shrug it off and have the audience like him the more for it. Hey, and some good songs they have too. This was the first time I'd heard them but I think they'll be worth another listen at least!
Then it was time for TOL's parting performance. Two things that their regular fans would have noticed were that Chris B was in a bright pink plastic outfit, it's a bit difficult to miss that, and that Egg was sitting on a high stool for playing his bass guitar. As we later found out, he'd broken his foot playing basketball.
Anyway, on with the performances and I must say they quickly got into their stride. It must have been the emotion and sense of occasion. They were playing and singing particularly freely tonight, with Mysterious Mr B playing his sax while roaming the stage and Chris B shaking it from places on the stage she usually doesn't get to go, that and her "When Harry Met Sally" moment on stage.
Egg had his regular slot when he sang and played Keane on this occasion, which always goes down a treat with the fans. Matt was outstanding on drums and really shows promise, if it only weren't his second outing with the band and that they're breaking up. And Chris W was solid in his guitar-play, perhaps being a bit subdued about this being his last time with the band and/or his fiancée being in the audience. Whatever, it was a rousing mix of their own songs and cover versions.
Perhaps it's a fitting end when the writer is able to guess the song they played as their encore and last song - Sympathy for the Devil. Perhaps it was luck ... or perhaps they were Thinking Out Loud. I'll tell you one thing, I'd still rather see them come back, and indeed "Pleased to meet you".
